Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
I started Headwaters Marketing in 2004 so 9 years now.
What is your primary product or service?
My team is virtual and top design, video, web and other talent. I offer startups a price conscious way to launch effectively and larger organizations a bigger view of who they can be. That includes market assessments, brand, PR, web development, design, writing, channel sales tools, video...all aligned to very specific outcomes.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
I knew early on in life that I had talent and was creative. Plus accepted I would never play pro basketball so design, innovation and business creativity became lifelong passions. I was lucky to hone my skills in NYC on highly visible accounts including Broadway Theater, Madison Square garden, Reddy Kilowatt, Girl Scouts, Drexel-Heritage, Ethan Allen then Melon bank, Perkins-Shearer, Writer Homes in Denver. Great clients. I managed communications for DU while also starting a Family Practice magazine, then after just missing out on joining Karsh Hagan as a startup, I joined HP and what a great ride that was leading their most successful marketing programs ever.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
You know, there are some great design firms in Fort Collins that I have hired and applaud. I love seeing younger people embrace marketing and design as my general attitude and demeanor is supportive and collaborative. They are now doing what I did 35 years ago and still love today, so am excited for them where they create an edge. If I look critically at how I have evolved and how that may differentiate me and "us", I would have to say my inane ability to read markets and shape clients to be super successful engaging those markets, earning credibility and becoming a member of the community that most aspire to support. That in itself excites me for good reason. Innovation is (finally) getting the attention it deserves and I donate some of my time the last 6 years to Sage to help startups get going.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
Oh don't panic my dogs. I am staying put. I passed on offers to run the marketing for Steelcase and bass Pro Shops as been there, done that. I just started Headwaters Ventures and man it is hot. I got tired, as many have, of waiting for politicians and others to solve problems that in truth require creative and critical thinking. that's what Headwaters Ventures is all about. I also follow several thought leaders who have confirmed my purposeful models are the bleeding edge of better approaches. I apply an open collaborative business model to helping entrepreneurs, revitalizing larger organizations and redefining experience travel as just a few. The way we as a society have accepted traditional work definitions needs a kick in the ass so these models serve as more inspired jobs engines but not compromised like most of what you see today. Will do my best to recruit partners and strategic alliances in the months ahead.
Provide detailed directions to your location
I work out of my house deliberately versus adding overhead I am obligated to pass on to clients. But I am at 712 Garfield Street in University Acres in Old Town. Great neighbors, large yards, plenty of foxes so a slice of Colorado.
What type of payments do you accept?
False promises, wishful thinking, lottery tickets. ha ha... no, been mostly set up to take a check or can use PayPal if it helps a client, I can easily set up credit card payments. I try to discount my already modest rates to keep a project manageable. Heck marketing firms wanting to gain an edge hire me to help and they can mark me up easily when they see the value. Not being greedy seems to be the best payment structure.
Which areas do you service?
My launch and brand strategy approach can help any organization as demonstrated across fitness, health, technology, banking, travel, bioscience, natural resources, education and any market where creating real value is imperative to success. Sure we do web sites, logo's, sales tools, social media strategies and much more as do others. I prefer to find clients that want to create something special so I stay small deliberately so I can help them personally.
Who owns your company or runs daily operations?
I do and my two dogs have operations responsibilities.
What are your hours of operation?
The beauty and the beast of being a virtual marketing firm is we blur the lines as to hours. Sure we work days but also have the flexibility to do a hike and work eves and weekends. My talent team is incredibly committed and talented so the rest is defined by the demands of each client and I mean real needs so we apply our time wisely.
What is the best compliment anyone can give you?
That I helped them and did it in a way that exceeded expectations. Sure it sounds great when I recant that I won "most strategic thinker" in HP every time there was a competition, the remarkable ramp ups to $100M inside 12 months time but when I hear a person say "you helped me to make tough decisions, to quit my day job, to be successful"...that makes it all worthwhile.
What is your favorite quote or Bible verse?
There are many. One was that "only a small team of creative people can change the world, and that how it always happens" and the other by Seth Godin "What happens when you define a win as getting closer to someone who wants the same thing? Or when you define it as improvement over time? Or in creating trust?"
